To buy ADSL you have to have a standard BT line and wall socket (the small white BT wall box) - most businesses and homes have these.

Currently about 85% of the country can get ADSL search here and find out whether your local exchange is enabled.
To be within a 'reasonable distance' of the local BT exchange
Because of the drop in signal strength the further away from the exchange you are, you currently need to be within a reasonable distance of the local exchange. The local range of ADSL is gradually being extended click here to see if can recieve adsl broadband.
An ADSL Modem or Router
To get the fastest, most reliable speed available on your line, we recommend you connect using Wi-Fi (wireless) or Ethernet - meaning the connection between your router and your computer and other networked devices, such as PlayStation - rather than using USB
Your broadband modem router will allow you to share your Internet connection with another computer, laptop, games console or other Internet-enabled device.
Please note a dial-up modem won’t work.
